The "Erdstall" is an artificially constructed cave system. Many of these caves were built during the Middle Ages. The term "Erdstall" does not relate to a stable or stall, but rather signifies a specific location or spot. Each one has only one entrance and exit, with winding tunnels that are extremely narrow. Occasionally, a very small passage is included, known as a "Schlupf," and sometimes smaller chambers connect to the tunnel. The overall length rarely exceeds 50 meters. They can be found in Ireland, Cornwall, certain Scottish islands, Brittany, central France, southern and central Germany, Upper and Lower Austria, Moravia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland.
