Humans construct artificial caves known as Erdstalls during the Middle Ages. These structures are scattered across various regions including Ireland, Cornwall, Scotland's isles, Brittany, and parts of France, Germany, Austria, Moravia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. A unique feature of Erdstalls is their single entrance and narrow winding tunnels that rarely extend beyond 50 meters in length. Sometimes, a small passage called Schlupf is built for added protection. In other instances, compact chambers connect to the main tunnel system, creating a complex network of passageways within these artificial caves.
