Erdstall im Waldviertel

Artificial caves known as "Erdstalls" have been constructed throughout history, primarily during the Middle Ages. The term "Erdstall" is derived from a location or spot rather than being related to a stable. Each of these underground structures typically features a single entrance and exit, with winding tunnels that are remarkably narrow. Some Erdstalls may also include an additional narrow passage for escape purposes, while others may have smaller chambers connected to the main tunnel. The overall length of these artificial caves rarely exceeds 50 meters in length. Locations where Erdstalls can be found include Ireland, Cornwall, certain Scottish islands, Bretagne, central France, southern and central Germany, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Moravia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland.
