The Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) blasted off into space on October 5, 1984 as part of NASA's latest scientific research endeavors, with the primary goal of extensively studying the Earth's radiation budget and stratospheric aerosol and gases. Successfully carried into low earth orbit by the Space Shuttle Challenger during the STS-41-G mission, the spacecraft was equipped to provide valuable data for a two-year operation life, but instead, it provided groundbreaking scientific data about the Earth's ozone layer for over two decades.
