Mock up an ER40 collet chuck for your lathe, but don't even think about running a plastic chuck on that machine. This mock-up is strictly for testing dimensions before you commit to a full metal design. Collets are perfect for holding cylindrical stock in place. An ER40 size is a great fit for my 9x20 lathe. Inexpensive collet sets are widely available, but you'll need a way to attach the collet to your lathe. Turning your own collet chuck is likely the most precise and cost-effective method, but it's a time-consuming operation that requires a significant amount of metal. That's why testing the design with a 3D print makes perfect sense.
