Equisetum hyemale is widely recognized as rough horsetail, scouring rush, and scouringrush horsetail, with the name snake grass used in South Africa. This perennial herb belongs to the fern Phylum Pteridophyta and is native throughout the Holarctic Kingdom, thriving in North America, Europe, and northern Asia. Equisetum hyemale boasts vertical jointed reed-like stalks of medium to dark green color, with hollow stems reaching up to 3 feet (0.91 m) in height. The stems are typically unbranched and feature conspicuous ridges infused with silica, giving them a rough and harsh texture. At each joint, the tiny leaves form a narrow black-green band or sheath around the stem. Like other ferns and their relatives, Equisetum hyemale reproduces via spores rather than producing flowers or seeds. The stems are generally deciduous in cold climates, remaining throughout winter in warmer climates, as it forms dense spreading colonies that thrive in full to partial sun.
