Experimenting with photogrammetry for small objects requires carefully crafted shooting scenarios. A majority of images utilized a lightbox to provide an even white background, slightly overexposed to ensure optimal results. No masking was needed to align the entire set of images as one cohesive component. However, longer exposures required to overexpose the lightbox necessitated the use of a tripod, which in turn made positioning a little more complicated. Employing a flash within the lightbox enables handheld shooting, allowing for easier plane-of-focus positioning and thereby reducing the number of images needed. Canon 5D III, 100mm macro, 1036 images Capturing Reality with photogrammetry tools like Reality Capture, InstantMeshes, and MeshLab (with normals re-computed) along with XNormal (normal and occlusion maps) streamlines the process.
