Medieval epitaph preserved at the MANN (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli). The inscription originates from the church of Sant'Agata de Amarenis (ex Santagatella) in Sant'Agata de' Goti (BN), and is a typical expression of a genre that finds particular diffusion both in Roman-Byzantine contexts, as well as among the courtly environments of Langobardia Minor. It stands out for its references to compositions by Paul the Deacon or classical metrics, such as the epitaphs of great sovereigns and pontiffs, with the inscription being an example of this, the funerary inscription of Adrian I at San Pietro, commissioned by Charlemagne. The epigraphic apparatus and writing suggest a dating within a production that ranges from the 9th to the 10th century, in the context of a Beneventan and Capuan production. The characters are fully encompassed within the graphic fashion that spread throughout the Beneventan area as a result of contaminations originating from the Longobardic kingdom of the north, which had already fallen.
