An epicyclic gear arrangement comprises two gears, one orbiting the other. The centres of both are connected via a carrier that rotates, carrying the 'planet' gear around the stationary 'sun' gear. This setup enables the pitch circle of the planet gear to trace an epicycloid curve without slipping. In this basic scenario, the sun gear remains fixed as the planetary gears roll round it.
