Epic Fu Logo
thingiverse
To commemorate Epic Fu's visit to CrashSpace in March 2010, Sean requested me to create a 3D version of their logo using the Makerbot. The outcome is displayed below, along with several files utilized during the process to produce the STL. My initial steps involved converting an EPS version of the logo into PNG using Preview (OSX). Next, I employed GIMP for cleaning up and creating two separate PNGs: one for the base (rect) and another for the letters. These were then imported into Inkscape individually, where Path-trace bitmap tool was used to create paths, which were subsequently saved as SVG files. Blender was used next, where I scaled, extruded, positioned, and converted these SVGs into meshes. The base/rect mesh was appended to the letters mesh, after which both were converted to STL. However, the Inkscape-Blender process was more intricate than it appears; Path-break apart and additional cleanups in Inkscape were necessary for successful execution. Blender also displayed some difficulty in loading multiple SVGs, necessitating a restart for each model. Despite my efforts, I have not yet managed to print the object as my Makerbot continues to experience feed problems. However, I am sharing these files with others who may want to give it a try. A more detailed account of the process can be found on http://wiki.makerbot.com/making-a-3d-logo.
