Ephebos (epheboi) or ephebe (plural: ephebes), anglicized from the Greek word, refers to an adolescent or a specific social status reserved for that age in Antiquity. Typically, this term describes young men of training age, but its primary usage is for members exclusively from that age group who participate in official institutions called ephebeia. These institutions focus on transforming them into citizens and skilled soldiers, often deployed to the battlefield; Greek city-states heavily relied on their militia of citizen-soldiers for defense. In Greek mythology, an ephebe was a young man or initiate, usually around 17-18 years old, who underwent isolation from his community, typically the world of his mother. During this period, he had to rely on hunting skills, his senses, aggression, stealth, and trickery to survive. Upon completion of the initiation, the ephebe was reintegrated into society as a man, equipped with essential survival skills necessary for protecting the community from potential threats.
