I plan to use it as a 3D printer, but it's an open platform that can be modified and customized to fit your needs. This design uses six 6810 bearings in the arm joints to allow for smooth rotation and reduce backlash by providing a large moment radius due to the bearing size. The segments that make up the arms can be any form of 20x20mm stock, with the joints designed to slot and bolt into the 20x20 stock. You can change the length of the stock depending on how long you want the arm. There is currently a 25:1 gear ratio built in using belts and gears, providing greater precision at the end of the arm. With 128 micro-stepping, it's theoretically possible to achieve an accuracy of ~0.005mm using a 500mm arm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, so after two years or something, I finally got the motivation and time (thanks COVID-19) to redesign and rebuild my original SCARA arm, which failed miserably. This one I actually modeled properly, and I have a fairly good workflow with it now. Being older and wiser also helps. These files are for the actual 3D printed pieces, so if you want to make one, you'll need lots of GT2 belt, screws, nuts, six 6810 bearings, and some kind of 20x20mm square thing for the arms. At this point, I'm still in the early stages of making it, so there may be updates or not. I've already bought everything I need, so it would be wasteful of me to not build it. Expect updates... maybe. Firmware and electronics are not even on my radar yet, but I'm thinking of using hall effect sensors, IR sensors, and a Duet2 WiFi to control everything. I may provide updates or not; I haven't decided yet. 1st Update - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_bkBhvsohg
