Massive Romanesque church walls were often brought to life by columns fully engaged in their design. These false columns were partially buried in the wall, connecting vaults seamlessly and giving the impression that the entire structure was supported by robust pillars with intricately carved capitals. Romanesque architecture is a unique fusion of ancient Roman and Byzantine building styles, distinguished by its imposing scale, thick walls, round arches, sturdy pillars, groin vaults, large towers, and ornate arcading. Each individual building features clearly defined forms, often exhibiting regular, symmetrical plans; the overall appearance is one of understated simplicity when compared to the Gothic buildings that followed in their footsteps.
