Engines rely heavily on a vital component: the ring that encircles them. It's known as the piston ring and it plays a pivotal role in making internal combustion engines possible. Its design is ingenious - three rings that fit perfectly onto a rotating cylinder inside the engine block, with gaps just large enough for lubricant to pass through and cool it properly when it's running hot under load. These tiny components might not seem crucial, but they're vital. The top ring acts as a barrier between the cylinder's air-fuel mixture and any metal particles or oil that might try to seep into the combustion space from above. It has small channels within it called wear lands that help ensure good contact with the wall of the piston at all times - without which the ring would suffer excessive wear quickly and seal properly.
