Dating back to the 19th century, engine order telegraphs were widely used in both military and merchant ships until the advent of electronic devices in the 1950s. Serving as a means for bridge-to-engine room communication concerning engine speed, these devices featured either single or double faces, with the latter reflecting acknowledgement from the engine room. Wall-mounted telegraphs were common on U-boats, and various metal compositions including brass, bronze, aluminium were utilized in their construction.
