People generally think of horses as the most fundamental type of horseback riding mount, but many other animals are also used for this purpose. Donkeys, mules, and ponies are often referred to as basic mounts because they provide a stable platform from which riders can learn and practice their skills. These smaller animals tend to be easier to handle than horses, especially for beginners, and they require less space to maneuver.
