Ender 5/Pro/Plus VORON Afterburner Direct Drive Mount
thingiverse
What is it? ======== This is a mount for the Creality Ender 5/Pro/Plus to allow the use of the awesome direct drive quick change toolhead by VORON Designs called the Afterburner. The Afterburner is the latest toolhead from Voron and allows the use of 3 different hotends: E3D V6 Slice Engineering Mosquito Trianglelab Dragon It has the inner guts of a BMG dual drive extruder and a pancake stepper to save weight. I am currently building a Voron 2.4 but was having issues with the stock hotend fan "washing" the printed parts with cool air and causing issues when printing ABS, this was the same with full stock and a Hero Me Gen 3/4 cooling system. Another thingiverse user @Adiyahu has created a mount for the CR10 and I started off with the idea of a remix. Although I went down a completely different design route in the end, he was really helpful, answered endless questions and made a few good suggestions that led me to where I am. This mount allows the AB to be COMPLETLEY stock, as designed by VORON Design and as such any improvements they make should be able to be adopted without changing anything. It does not require you to modify the stock X plate other than switching the button head nut on the bottom wheel the other way (see images) Installation ======== You will need..... 2 x M3 Tapered Heat-set Threaded Insert (5x4mm) 1 x M3x30 SHCS 2 x M3x16 SHCS 2 x M3x8 BHCS The images should explain where to install the heatsets and M3x16. The M3x30 is used to bolt both halves of the mount to each other and should be done up once correctly aligned on the X plate and before bolting to the original hotend mount posts. The M3x8 are used to attach the mount to the original hotend mount posts. The bottom wheel (with the eccentric nut) should be tightened before installing the mount the other 2 can be loose to allow reinstallation and are accessible when mounted. If you've switched to a pancake stepper you may need to lower the Vref for the extruder as its rated for less amps and could run very hot. I am running the Creality 1.1.5 Silent board with 2208s and measured 0.850v which is 0.6A RMS, this is well within the 1A spec of the pancake stepper so ended up not changing anything. You may need to alter your bed size or set a Y offset, on the Pro I lost 10mm of Y axis and gained about 10 on Z. Printing the Afterburner ======== I will not attempt to cover this here! This mount will take either the VORON Afterburner beta or the latest and greatest from the 2.4 printer (recommended) Resources available: http://vorondesign.com http://vorondesign.com/voron_afterburner (beta) http://vorondesign.com/voron2.4 https://github.com/VoronDesign/Voron-2 What now? ======== This is the first iteration I've been willing to publish and should improve over time. I would like to design a way to use cable chain with the AB (as it was designed) either printed or bought with the Ender 5/Pro. There is currently no option for a BLTouch or other bed levelling system and I have no intention of trying to include the VORON inductive sensor as you would lose too much Y axis and would need a non stock board to support it. I may add a mounting option for a BLTouch but as I don't own one or want to add to the weight I will probably leave that up to people far more talented than me at CAD! If you would like to tip/buy me a coffee that would be great I can guarantee the money will be spent on my VORON 2.4 build or more filament (I have a problem). Print Settings ========== Printer brand: Creality Printer: Ender 5 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2 Infill: 40% Filament_brand: eSun ABS+ Filament_material: ABS Notes: The VORON Afterburner and subsequently this mount were designed to be printed in ABS. You may get away with other materials but I would personally only print this in ABS. It is completely possible to print these small parts in ABS on a stock Ender 5/Pro/Plus. I would recommend a low warp ABS variant like eSun ABS+ (it's also low odor) and some form of enclosure which could be a simple as a cardboard box. The tolerances of this are quite tight so you will need to have tuned your printer to be accurate in X Y Z and its extrusion but if you are going to print an AB you will have to do this anyway. See images for print orientation.
