Ender 5 Compact In-Frame Storage

Compact storage for Ender 5 There are a lot of designs out there for the Ender 3 but not many for the ender 5. I wanted some extra storage for tools and spare parts on my printer but not increase the overall footprint of the printer. ________________________________________________________________________ EXTRA PARTS: 2x M5 x25mm screws Stepper Motor Extension Cable (for z-axis -or you can solder longer wires) ________________________________________________________________________ IMPORTANT In order for the electronics housing to be moved back you will need to flip the Z-axis and mount the stepper from the top. If you do not do this, you will not be able to fit the trays. You will also need to update Marlin: Configuration.h (line:1338) ORIGINAL: define INVERT_Z_DIR false UPDATE: define INVERT_Z_DIR true ________________________________________________________________________ Swapping the Z axis direction To prevent you from losing any volume you will need to flip the bed assembly. And then remove the bed from the guide rods and then flip it up the right way. (See photo) ________________________________________________________________________ PRINTING The Offset trays stabilize the base of the printer frame. So you should print those with a stronger infill pattern (i.e. cubic or gyroid) and a higher infill percent (I used 60% gyroid). The offset trays have parts which will need supports as they slot into the 2020 extrusion vslot with a snug fit. If you can't get them to fit, use a little sand paper or a file until they fit in snugly but are not loose. The screws should only be needed for preventing any minor movements NOT fixing the trays in place. If it is too loose you may issues with frame wobble. The tool trays can be printed at a lower infill percent as they do not support much weight and are not structural. I used zig zag 30%. I printed version 1, and everything works well. I have uploaded V2 of the right tool tray, but have yet to print it as I am still making a few updates for storage of some sockets. ________________________________________________________________________ INSTALL To install the trays, start by flipping the Z axis as explained above. Then remove the bottom horizontal extrusion on the front of the frame. Then unscrew the remaining 2 screws for the electronics enclosure and slide it back. Then aligning the offset trays, slide them into place trying to keep them as square to the frame as possible. Then screw the offset trays to the frame and the electronics enclosure to the trays and the back 2 screws. (see photo) Re-install the bottom horizontal extrusion on the front of the frame and screw in the last 2 screws to fix the offset trays in place. Now attach your stepper extension cable or solder in some extension wires (as I did).
