This design serves three purposes: it provides protection to the exposed bearings for the z-axis screws (no dust accumulation, filament fragments, etc falling in), provides a filament guide for those that aren't using the on-body spool holder that comes with the S1, and also provides a mounting point for others wanting to accessorize their S1. The cap is made to fit on either side of the printer, and the filament guide can be inserted into the mounting slot either way as well.
