Ender 3 Filament Guide With Cable Chain Support (Remixing x 2)
thingiverse
Human: Remixing X 2 = I recently switched to the filament guide by FlintWeiss as my previous choice kept popping off the extruder plate. It works really well. I also use, and really like, the Cable Chain by johnniewiskey. The only problem I have with the Cable Chain is the extruder power cable chain flops about sideways, whereas the bed chain has a neat linear movement. That may be down to the play in the chain, but that will only get worse over time. 2 Birds/1 Stone = I started thinking about solutions involving adding a support to the end of the chain, so I began looking at possible mounting points. The most likely location was on the extruder mount, which would keep the chain aligned and travel with the extruder. But I already have a filament guide there, firmly screwed to the plate... So I combined the 2 existing parts from 2 separate projects and made a piece to sit between them and join them together, giving the chain a firm mount. Construction = I imported both existing parts (filament guide and chain end) into Fusion 360 for reference. Then I created a joining part approximately 6cm long. I imported the new part into Cura and simply aligned the existing parts with either end of my connector. The result is a supporting piece for the chain, with built-in filament guide. I uploaded the combined part, including the other 2 creations, so that you wouldn't have to do the fiddly alignment yourself. Updates = After a helpful suggestion, I imported the extrusion plate and modified the support to screw in 2 places using the stock screws. I cleaned up the original screw hole using a projection of the plate hole. I also resized the STL correctly (the reference STL parts imported at 1000% into Fusion 360 for some reason). Upcoming updates = _Coming soon:_ Having seen similar problems with the original filament guide, with the hook breaking too easily during support removal, I decided to retain the general shape of the guide but completely rebuild it in Fusion 360. I want to better match the extruder plate shape and increase the strength of the hook. I just finished building 3 variations of this new filament guide from scratch along with several fixing options (including 6mm x 3mm Molybdenum magnets). As they don't remix this thing, I will add a new thing shortly and add a link here.
