Ender 3 Extruder Filament Bearing Guide
thingiverse
I decided to create my own version of a wheel-based extruder filament guide since existing options didn't meet my requirements. This design mounts onto the X-axis stepper motor, fitting over small bushings that align the wheels with vertical rails. The setup provides a rigid and strong mounting bracket. To ensure smooth rotation and accurate filament guidance, I incorporated a 608 ball bearing into the design. This feature is essential for a reliable printing experience. Installation requires some printer disassembly and reassembly. To begin, remove the spool holder and top cross bar from vertical supports. Then, slide the X-axis assembly off the printer to release tension on the wheels. Remove the two screws holding the outer wheels in place so you can insert bushings into bracket holes. Reassemble the wheels, slip the X-axis assembly back onto vertical supports and the Z-axis screw, then reattach the top cross bar and filament spool holder. The entire process takes approximately 10-15 minutes. I've discovered a potential issue with the Z-axis moving too high, which may cause the bearing guide to bump into accessories protruding from the end of the top cross bar. However, this can be resolved by shaving off part of the wider arm base where it slides into the filament guide endcap. To build this design, you will need: * 1 x 608z ball bearing (you can source one from old roller blades) * 1 x #8 x 1.25" screw * 1 x #8 plain washer * 1 x #8 plain nut or nylon lock nut * Blue Loctite, if using a plain nut * Hex wrenches for loosening or removing bolts for the spool holder, top cross bar, and X-axis wheels Refer to images below for assembly over bushings. Note that the filament dips slightly below the extruder opening in my images; I've already adjusted the wheel height by 5mm to achieve a better path to the extruder. STL, STEP, and Fusion 360 models are included for those who want to make modifications.
