Endangered Species: Rhino
cults3d
I decided to create a 3D model of a rhino's bust and print it using a "wireframe" technique I had previously used with other designs. This time, however, I employed a different method where I generated irregular particles along the edges of polygons and then converted them back into polygons. To minimize overhang issues, I wrote a Python script in Maya that tracked the angle of the edges, ensuring a smooth print process. As a result, very little cleanup was required after printing: no raft or support material was needed. The frame is actually a design I drew on some scrap MDF and then cut out using a jigsaw. I also routed the edges and applied a white coat of paint before attaching it to the print via epoxy. I painted the rhino's interior red, while applying a rubberized black undercoat to its exterior surface. Some people may see a penguin climbing up the wall once they notice this feature - it's one of those optical illusions that can be difficult to unsee.
