Encrusted Sword, St. Johns/Santa Clara Shipwreck
sketchfab
A rare steel rapier hilt and partial blade from the St. Johns shipwreck, likely the Spanish galleon Santa Clara, which sank in 1564. As the ship lay underwater, metal nails and other small items became snagged on the rapier, gradually binding it together with corrosion. A thick coating of calcium carbonate, rust, sand, and shells formed around the entangled mass as it corroded further. Restoring the artifacts within to near-perfect condition revealed a photogrammetric model of the refurbished rapier; view it here: https://skfb.ly/GWQq
