Nero emerged as Roman Emperor from 54 to 68 AD, marking the final chapter in the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Adopted by his great-uncle Claudius, Nero became his heir and successor after Claudius' death in 54. Focusing on diplomacy, trade, and cultural enrichment, Nero commissioned theaters and promoted athletic events, but was perceived as compulsive and corrupt by the Roman people, according to historian Tacitus. Corbulo, a skilled general, led a successful war and negotiated peace with the Parthian Empire during Nero's reign. Suetonius Paulinus crushed a revolt in Britain, while Nero annexed the Bosporan Kingdom and may have initiated the First Jewish-Roman War. In 64 AD, Rome was ravaged by the Great Fire, sparking rumors that Nero had orchestrated it to clear land for his Domus Aurea complex. The rebellion of Vindex in Gaul and Galba's acclamation in Hispania forced Nero from power. Confronted with a false report of being denounced as a public enemy, he took his own life on June 9, 68, becoming the first Roman emperor to do so. This marked the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, triggering a brief period of civil wars known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Nero's reign is often associated with tyranny and extravagance, highlighted by numerous executions, including that of his mother and the probable poisoning of his stepbrother Britannicus. Rumors also circulated about Nero's treatment of Christians, who were allegedly dipped in oil and set ablaze to illuminate his garden at night. However, some sources portray him as a popular emperor among the common people, particularly in the East. Modern historians question the reliability of ancient sources when reporting on Nero's alleged atrocities, casting doubt on the accuracy of Tacitus', Suetonius', and Cassius Dio's accounts.
