Emperor Gaius at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The portrait style created for Augustus was adopted by his family and immediate successors in order to emphasize the unity and continuity of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. This exceptional bust of Caligula, who ruled from A.D. 37-41, features regular facial features and carefully crafted locks of hair similar to those found in portraits of Augustus. However, the artist has also conveyed elements of Caligula's vanity and cruelty through the proud angle of his head and thin, pursed lips. This object is part of "Scan The World," a non-profit initiative launched by MyMiniFactory, which aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the world for public access. Scan the World is an open-source community effort, where individuals can contribute interesting items by emailing stw@myminifactory.com to learn how they can participate. Scanned using photogrammetry and processed with Agisoft PhotoScan.
