Constantine the Great, born on February 27th, circa 272 AD, was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 306 to 337 AD. He hailed from Thracian-Illyrian descent and was the son of Flavius Valerius Constantius, a prominent Roman army officer, and his partner Helena. His father rose to become Caesar in the west in 293 AD, and Constantine was sent to the east where he rapidly advanced through the ranks, eventually becoming a military tribune under Diocletian and Galerius. In 305, Constantius was elevated to Augustus, senior western emperor, and Constantine returned west to fight alongside his father in Britannia. After his father's death in 306 AD, Constantine was hailed as Emperor by the army at Eboracum (modern-day York), emerging victorious in a series of civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of both east and west by 324 AD. A sculpture of him is permanently displayed at the Louvre.
