Constantine the Great (27 February c. 272 AD – 22 May 337 AD), also known as Constantine I or Saint Constantine, was a powerful Roman Emperor who ruled from 306 to 337 AD with roots tracing back to Thracian-Illyrian ancestry. Born to Flavius Valerius Constantius, a renowned Roman army officer, and his beloved consort Helena, Constantine grew up under the watchful eye of his ambitious father. In 293 AD, Constantius was appointed Caesar, deputy emperor in the west, where he commanded great respect from his peers. Constantine's own rise through the ranks began when he was sent east to serve under the influential emperors Diocletian and Galerius. By 305, Constantius had reached the pinnacle of power as Augustus, senior western emperor, prompting Constantine's recall west to join him in a series of grueling battles in Britannia. After his father's untimely death in 306 AD, Constantine seized the opportunity to rally his troops and emerged victorious against the formidable emperors Maxentius and Licinius, solidifying his position as sole ruler of both west and east by 324 AD. Today, an exquisite sculpture of this legendary leader is proudly displayed at the world-renowned Louvre Museum for all to admire.
