Emperor Caracalla at The Louvre, Paris
cults3d
Following the death of his father Septimus Severus, Caracalla brutally murdered his brother Publius Septimius Geta to seize sole reign. This portrait style was specifically commissioned by Caracalla for himself and marks a significant departure in official Roman portraiture - it's the first time emotion is explicitly shown through sculpture, conveying aggression; just look at the furrowed brows and raised lip corners that scream anger. Multiple reproductions of this head from the same period have been created.
