Alexander II was Russia's Emperor from March 2, 1855, until his murder on March 13, 1881. He also held positions as King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland. Notable for freeing Russian serfs in 1861, earning him the title Alexander the Liberator, he implemented various reforms including overhauling the judicial system, establishing elected local judges, eliminating corporal punishment, promoting local self-governance through zemstvo institutions, enforcing universal military service, abolishing nobility privileges, and fostering university education. After a failed assassination attempt in 1866, Alexander took on a more conservative stance until his death. This statue of the man comes from Vasilevskiy Island in St Petersburg.
