The historic Emmitsburg Presbyterian Church has been a cornerstone of the community since before America declared its independence from Great Britain. Founded in September of 1760, the church was led by Reverend Robert McMordie as their first minister. The early Presbyterians played a pivotal role in the fight for freedom while building new communities, with their churches serving as a vital force in the western territories beyond the coastal areas. The original church building underwent significant changes over the years. In 1869, it was renovated and then demolished to make way for a stunning brick structure with a Gothic design and an impressive steeple in 1879. Unfortunately, the church suffered a devastating blow when struck by lightning in 1902, leaving only its walls standing. However, the community rallied, and the present building was completed in 1904. In 1950, it underwent a beautiful redecoration, restoring its former glory.
