I used to pretend that I was zooming around through the sky, flying faster than all the other racers, flying through that red hoop that is the finish line, and becoming the Buddy of the Year. If I could have one wish, it would be to enter the Aircraft Race. And today, that dream has finally come true.\r\n“I can’t believe it!” I said to my best friend Oliver the Alien. I pushed off the ground with my powerful bunny legs and twirled in the air.\r\n“Me neither,” he replied, smiling. “Though the chances of either of us winning are close to nothing, it will be an amazing experience.”\r\n“Don’t say that,” I told him. “If we try our best, I know we can win!”\r\n“But only one of us can win,” Oliver said. I nodded, though I wished both of us could win and be the Buddy of the Year.\r\nWe walked to a booth with a sign that read “Aircraft Race Competitor Sign-In.” A smiling, three-eyed alien greeted us.\r\n“Hello there!” the alien grinned. “Are you here to compete in the Buddy Games Aircraft Race?”\r\n“Yes!”\r\n“May I have your names please?” The alien pulled out a clipboard.\r\n“I’m Emmalyn,” I said.\r\n“Thank you, Emmalyn.”\r\n“And I’m Oliver,” he added.\r\n“Great to meet you both,” the alien replied. “Welcome to the Buddy Games Aircraft Race!”\r\nWe signed in and received our racing numbers. We were ready to compete!\r\nAs we walked towards the starting line, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. This was it – my dream had finally come true! I was going to be a part of the Buddy Games Aircraft Race.\r\nThe starting gun fired, and we were off! My aircraft shot forward, and I quickly gained speed. I zoomed past buildings, turned sharply left, and rose higher into the sky. The wind blew in my face, and my ears fluttered behind me.\r\nI was in second place at first, but I didn’t give up. I pushed harder, and slowly began to gain on the leader. The crowd cheered as I passed through the red hoop and started my second lap.\r\nThe second lap was just as thrilling as the first. I zigzagged through buildings, rose and dropped, and upped my speed. I was determined to win!\r\nAs I approached the final lap, I could see the leader in front of me. I pushed harder with all my might, and amazingly, magically, I passed them! My jaw dropped as I sped forward.\r\nThe crowd began to scream, their cheers reaching a peak. A sudden numbness came into my mind. I was going to win. My dream was going to come true. I was going to be the Buddy of the Year.\r\nBut then disaster struck! A little blue aircraft darted in front of me and passed through the hoop. The crowd went wild, cheering, throwing confetti. I passed through the finish next, and after me the silver aircraft, then Oliver. I landed my aircraft. Everything seemed distant and faint. Confetti showered down. The loudspeaker boomed. A band began to play.\r\nFor a moment, I felt nothing. And then suddenly, a ball of joy grew within me. I was standing here in front of a huge crowd as they cheered, with confetti raining down and music playing. It didn’t matter that I didn’t win. I had had fun.\r\nOliver came and hugged me, and then I went over to the racer who had won in their little blue aircraft.\r\n“Congratulations!” I said, and I meant it. The racer turned towards me. She was a young, pink alien.\r\n“Thank you!” she replied, beaming. “You did amazing!”\r\nI thanked her, and so did Oliver, and we stood in front of the celebrating audience. I didn’t win. I didn’t become the Buddy of the Year. But I did have fun. And my dream did come true.
