Characterized by a tapered structure made of reinforced concrete, it stands as the tallest freestanding edifice within the United Kingdom, measuring 330.4 metres (1,084 feet) in height. A journey via lift to reach the Tower Room at 275 m (900 ft), located at the upper part of the tower's concrete section, lasts seven minutes. The antennae structure beyond this reaches an additional 56 m (184 ft). Its base penetrates 6.1 metres (20 feet) into the ground and comprises the entire edifice, weighing a total of 11,200 tonnes. Designed by Ove Arup and Partners, it stood as the third-tallest freestanding structure in Europe when constructed, surpassing the Fernsehturm Berlin with its height at that time of 368 metres (1,207 feet).
