On many boats with single lever gearbox controls, a small knob is used to disengage the gear selector, allowing the throttle to be used without selecting a gear - for instance when starting the engine. This tiny knob can sometimes break off, making it tough to select a gear. To address this issue, a tool has been developed that helps move the gear select knob into position and engage the gearbox if the original knob breaks off. Following established maritime protocols, it's common knowledge that things can go awry - and often do so at the most inopportune moments. Having this tool on hand could prevent considerable embarrassment and avoid the frustration of muttered expletives.
