Emergency Kit Backpack for kids
thingiverse
Update: I'm thrilled to share that I am now a winner! After years of feeling like a loser, a simple post on Thingiverse with an adorable 2-year-old model did the trick, and I won the Cutbag Contest. You might wonder how a mere Thingiverse post could deserve a $150 prize? Well, it's simple – others didn't enter their incredible cardboard+bag world-changing inventions. For that, thank them! Now that I am officially a winner, feel free to enter the next contest and bask in the praise and adulation (not to mention the cash). Contest winnings will be used to upgrade my MakerBot Cupcake and support my next project. Check out my winning design on Thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:9117 Remember, after natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the Japan earthquake, it's crucial to have emergency supplies on hand. Here's a low-cost, easy-to-make backpack for kids that can hold essentials like water and food. Don't forget to refer to FEMA's suggestions for what to include in the pack: http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/assemble_disaster_supplies_kit.shtm. If there's too much to fit, encourage your children to carry their own supplies in their backpacks. To make the backpack, you'll need a 25lb rice bag or similar sturdy bag, a cereal box, and some tape. First, unravel the bag's stitching at the bottom and cut along the side to create a large sheet. Next, trim the cereal box for small kids (leave a flap as a lid) and wrap it in the bag sheet. Tape the bottom and front inside and outside. Cut long strips from the top of the bag for shoulder straps (about 4 inches wide). Add cardboard for padding and tape the straps to the triangle tabs at the bottom and the top back of the pack. Finally, attach the straps and tape the bottom triangles as desired. Pack it with emergency supplies, close tightly, and store until needed.
