UPDATE: I've added +1mm and +2mm to accommodate stacking materials that get too thick. Printing screws at 100% infill is also suggested as some users have reported breakage when overtightening them. Improvements were made to the open-source design released by Dr. Zaugg for 3D printing a mask using a 2"x2" piece of filter material, which can be used to make 4+ filters with a single N95 mask and reusable 3D printed parts. The design was optimized for a wide variety of filter materials. Dr. Zaugg's website for reference is https://longliveyoursmile.com/3d-printable-mask-for-covid-19/. The original design had some issues: pushing a square block through a square hole made it difficult to achieve the correct thickness and seal, strap attachments were too close to the edge to accommodate tubing or rubber seals, and there was no clear method for scaling. I'm working with Dr. Zaugg's office to post these files as well. A printable scale ruler is included to measure your face (see a photo of how to measure). Measure from the bridge of your nose to the point of your chin, and read off the scale readout to determine how much to scale all the 3D printed parts. If you have calipers or a fine metric ruler, you can use the formula y(x)% = 0.6061 * x + 26.364 to find the scale based on your face measurement in mm. Printing in ridged material makes it challenging to create a mask that fits everyone's face. If the mask fits correctly around your nose and chin area, you can use a hair dryer to thermo-form the ill-fitting areas to your specific face profile (printing in PLA is suggested). The thumb screws' threaded area requires finer layer height printing (I'm using variable layer height at 0.07mm via PrusaSlicer). UPDATE: Reducing the screw's scale by 2-3% resolved an issue with the male screw thread working when switching materials. Additional assembly components are needed: Qty. 1, 2"x2" flat filter media (sandwiched between the mask and the sandwich plate and clamped with the 4 3D printed thumb screws) Qty. 2, 6-8" elastic bands (consider reusing elastic from N95 or surgeon masks, or rubber bands as a substitute)
