Emblem Of The First Order

I love Star Wars! It's safe to say most people do too, including me. Growing up watching the movies and cartoons was a big part of my childhood, even now I still make those iconic lightsaber noises when turning on a flashlight. When I saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I knew I wanted something unique to commemorate it - not just another generic item from the store. That's why I was thrilled when cosplayer friend Technically Toki contacted me about making her an officer badge from the First Order, which she planned to wear on her hat. Once I finished creating it for her, I modified it to make a simple keychain for myself by adding a hole in the center of the badge. To print this design, I used my Printrbot Simple Black printer with the following settings: 200 resolution, no rafts or supports, and 100% infill. To create the design, I started by searching for reference images of the First Order emblem online and finding a few good ones. Then, I opened Adobe Illustrator to do a 2D sketch. I love using Illustrator because its line work tool set is robust and precise, and I've been using it for years so I'm fast and comfortable with it. Once I finished my design in Illustrator, I exported it as an SVG file and imported it into AutoDesk 123D Design, which is a free software that's part of the full suite of Autodesk tools. In 123D Design, all I had to do was use the extrude tool to bring the 2D sketch into the 3D world. I designed it to be thin so it would print quickly and not take up too much space in my pocket with my keys. I made two versions - one with a hole and one without - because I wanted to use both as an ice box magnet and a keychain. After modeling, I exported the final design into STL format for Cura, which is a free slicing program that's perfect for 3D printing.
