Manufactured by Neiva, a subsidiary of Embraer, situated in Botucatu, Brazil, the latest version runs on ethanol fuel, making it the first ethanol-powered fixed-wing aircraft. Due to abundant availability of ethanol in Brazil at only 25-30% of aviation gasoline cost, farmers experimented with alcohol as Ipanema's fuel, leading to the development of an alcohol-powered Ipanema. This model gained certification from the Brazilian General Command for Aerospace Technology (CTA) on October 19, 2004.
