They will hunt you to the edge of the Earth for this. Blomkamp is still the new school of sci-fi, really, but I fell deeply in love with the universe he created within the first 10 minutes of District 9. Then I saw Elysium and it instantly went straight into my top 5 movies list. The only bad thing was Foster's ADR; they should have just kept the French accent! The exo controller for the exo suit Max wears is something I immediately wanted to make. I will not lie, this took a huge toll on me. When researching the prop, I found out each exo suit had 3 different head controllers that made it into different parts of the movie. Each one was a little different. So I took the best parts of all three Max wore and merged them. It's not something anyone will notice, but a real pain in the behind for a prop maker. It had to look the part, but then screen also had to work and "hack." So all the casings and spine segments were 3D designed and printed. Then painted with metallic paint and finished with clear coat. All decals are vinyl and every arrow, letter, and line is hand placed, even on the cable. The screen is a 1.5 inch Adafruit module and it's powered by a custom board. The board cycles through a fun UI that mimics the readout from the movie. But I also programmed in a deauther too. It will mess with Wi-Fi wherever I am wearing it. Don't worry, this can be turned off via my phone. A little bit of me goes into each and every prop. This thing took a huge chunk from me. Making everything work how I wanted and making it look how it had to was a pain, but having it be wearable was a whole other story. The electronics took 3 attempts to get right too, so you can understand why I have so much pride in this one. #Elysium #DIY #Hack #3DPrinted #RandomPropShop
