Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977), widely recognized as Elvis, was an incredible American singer and actor. As one of the most pivotal cultural icons of the 20th century, he is frequently referred to as the King of Rock and Roll or simply the King. Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, but moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee when he was just 13 years old. He started his music career there in 1954 at Sun Records, teaming up with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to take African-American music to a broader audience. Joined by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley revolutionized the genre of rockabilly – an energetic blend of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D.J. Fontana joined the group, completing Elvis's legendary quartet, while RCA Victor secured his contract through Colonel Tom Parker, who managed him for over two decades. Presley's debut single with RCA, Heartbreak Hotel, was released in January 1956 and reached number one on the US charts. With a string of hit network TV appearances and record-breaking songs, he became the dominant force behind the newly emerging sound of rock and roll. Elvis's captivating performances, characterized by an intense energy and sensual style, combined with his unique fusion of influences from different racial backgrounds during a pivotal time in racial relations, made him extremely popular – and sometimes controversial.
