I used the linked source file as a base and added a case for the Wemos D1 Mini V3. This creates a very small sensor that is only attached to the gas meter. The power supply of the Wemos D1 via a cable with micro USB connector. In the housing I have installed a reed contact with hot glue. The Wemos D1 uses an ESP8266.
