Elna sewing machine bobbin extractor
thingiverse
Bobbin extractor designed for Elna sewing machines (star series, air electronic series, Lotus series, Contessa, etc). Original spares are no longer available, making this replica a necessary solution. The unique design of the originals features a thin shaft that is prone to breaking due to the spring screws. To overcome this issue, I've replaced the shaft with an M4 threaded hole, which accepts an M4 grub screw (6-8mm long). The spring then threads directly onto the grub screw. To repair or replace the bobbin extractor, start by removing the top cover of the machine (2 screws) and if equipped with a handle like on the air electronic or Lotus machines, also remove the clip securing it to its shaft. Next, locate the screw that secures the spring to the top end of the extractor tube near the light source. If unsure, try lifting it up; the screw and extractor will rise under spring tension (if the old extractor is still attached) or without tension if it has snapped off as they often do. Remove the screw from the spring, attach the printed extractor to the spring, and feed the spring in from the bottom. Insert a long screw into the extractor spring tube and screw it just enough into the end of the spring to grip it securely, allowing you to pull it up. Replace the long screw with the original screw removed earlier. Be cautious not to over-tighten the long screw, as this can make removal extremely difficult. It's better to err on the side of caution and remove it gradually rather than risking a stuck situation. It's common for the spring to become damaged during removal; unfortunately, I don't have access to specifications for replacement springs, so handle the original spring with care.
