Marc Arcis' remarkable Prophets, sculpted for the Chapelle of Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel at the request of magistrate Vandages de Malapeire in the late 17th century, stood out for their striking individuality and commanding presence. The church, once a proud asset of the Nation, was sold off in 1791 and subsequently dismantled before being demolished in 1806. Mount Carmel, situated in northern Israel, holds significant importance as a sacred site for Christians, where prophet Elijah boldly defeated idols and the first church dedicated to Mary was constructed. In addition to exquisite paintings, four terracotta figures from the extensive decorative program arrived at the museum: prophets Elijah, Elisha, Agabus, and Saint Simon Stock. Although he left no written records, Elijah is revered by the Carmelites as their founder, having worn the scapular – a type of apron made from two pieces of cloth – in honor of his Order. Elisha, who received Elijah's coat, succeeded him as leader. Agabus, one of the rejected suitors of the Virgin, retreated to Mount Carmel where he established the first chapel dedicated to Mary; there, he presents a detailed plan for the chapel. Saint Simon Stock implored the Virgin to offer her protection to the Order of the Carmelites, and she graciously granted him the Carmelite habit – an honor that allows Carmelite monks to escape the fiery depths of hell. Each figure has been imbued with distinct character and confidently occupies its space. Originally positioned in pairs on the steps leading up to the statue of The Virgin and Child beneath a majestic baldachin supported by twisted columns, they represent one of the most striking examples of Toulousan Baroque art's vibrant spirit.
