Elephant on Rock

Elephant on Rock

This is a model of a hollow elephant sculpture. The original elephant could only be made by sand casting, consisting of only a pattern and core box. This was changed using 3D scanning and digital manipulation in Blender, allowing you to print it.

The model was produced in an unusual way, being derived from scans of the pattern and core box rather than of a positive model. The 'rock' is actually a small piece of the gating system that can't easily be separated from the model.

Print Settings

Supports:

Yes

Notes:

The supports can be a pain to remove. I used a tree structure to make sure that it was all in one piece, and pulled it out with a pair of pliers.

How I Designed This

The pattern and core box halves were 3D scanned using the ATOS Triple Scan, a type of structured light 3D scanner. The core box halves were carefully aligned in Blender, and a cuboid was placed between them. The core box halves were subtracted from the cuboid using a Boolean difference operation, producing the core. The core was then aligned to the pattern and subtracted. Finally, the result was subtracted with a plane, revealing the internal cavity.
