Elena Ghiba-Birta protected Romanian education in the western part of her country with great dedication. Born in Bichiş, she was just ten years old when her mother passed away, and she had to move in with relatives in Pâncota. After marrying Emanoil Gogher, she settled down in Arad, but sadly lost him a few years later. However, she kept his last name, Birta. In 1830, Elena began working for Emanoil Gogher and stayed on the job for thirty-three years after his passing, when she inherited his wealth. She made her will one year before her death, donating a significant portion of her assets to various causes. One such donation was a substantial sum of 48,000 florins to establish a foundation in her name. This charitable gesture ensured that twelve scholarships would be awarded annually to students from low-income backgrounds who demonstrated academic merit. Today, the National College "Elena Ghiba-Birta" proudly bears her name and stands across from her impressive bust. Her legacy lives on as a testament to her compassion for students struggling to fund their education.
