THIS IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION. This is my current project on making my printer safer and quieter: The problem was the excessive number of cables hanging around the printer, making it a frustrating task to change anything on them. I also noticed that the original power supply was putting out slightly incorrect voltage and being very loud (it completely lost my confidence). So I started searching for safe and affordable solutions to this issue. ATX power supplies are extremely common for PCs, safe and affordable. They also come with the benefit of a sleep-mode pin. This can be utilized by octoprint. For your ATX choice: • Go with a high-quality brand and at least +60% power • Make sure that all rails and plugs are clearly explained in a manual • Power supplies without cable management are cheaper but are a nightmare to deal with, as most cables don't get used A very helpful website for me was: http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Makers-Guide-to-ATX-Power-Supplies/ Warning: • Don't connect different power rails • At every component, take safer choices than needed • Be aware of the maximum current per power supply cable (in my case roughly 5A) and mind your cable diameter • Don't save on cheap connectors; go with safe options such as https://www.phoenixcontact.com/online/portal/de?uri=pxc-oc-itemdetail:pid=3003017&library=dede&tab=1 • Use ferrules and fuses In my case, the printer needed 200W (17A at 12V). I wanted an especially quiet fan and wanted to consider possible future extensions to my printer, so I chose the BeQiet PurePower 500W. The larger rail only powers the bed, while the rest is on the second rail. 5V-standby is always on and I use it for my raspberry pi. Toggling power from raspberry pi: By using this plugin, you can toggle the standby pin of your power supply from anywhere with octoprint: https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/psucontrol/ • Don't do this if you're not a professional • Keep your printer under permanent attention
