I wanted to swap out the standard encoder dial on a Gadgets3D LCD with encoder for a custom one, but ran into trouble when the new knob wouldn't fit snugly onto my existing electronics setup. The solution was clear: fire up Sketchup and design an adapter that can be 3D printed to order, giving me the freedom to customize it exactly how I want it to work.
