This project is a simple yet exciting creation for the 4th of July, involving easy-to-acquire switches and laser-cut components. For detailed build specifics, visit my blog at http://www.built-to-spec.com/blog/2011/07/04/electronic-fireworks-ignition-system/. The laser-cut parts are crafted from 1/4" ABS. The Bill of Materials (BOM) includes about 25 feet of twisted, 16-gauge stranded wire; alligator clips; a 12-volt battery; an ammo box; small gauge nichrome wire; eight 8-32 x 1/2 inch bolts; and eight 8-32 nuts. Additionally, you'll need laser-cut ABS parts, a 12-volt red LED with holder (available at http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062568), a square, normally open push switch (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062501), and a 12-volt illuminated safety switch with cover (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062493).
