Ranged firearms typically designed to pneumatically launch solid projectiles (common with guns) but can also release liquid payloads (as in water blasters/cannons and projected water disruptors) or charged particles (like a plasma gun), which may be free-flying (such as bullets and artillery shells) or tethered (like Taser firearms, spearguns and harpoon firearms). Projectiles' means of propulsion vary with each design but are usually generated through a high-pressure gas contained within the firing tube (gun barrel). This pressure is produced either through quick combustion of propellants (as with traditional firearms) or by mechanical compression (like air guns). High-pressure gas is directed behind the projectile, speeding it down the tube's length, providing enough launch speed to sustain its travel towards the target after the propelling gas ceases acting on it at the end of the tube. Alternatively, acceleration can be achieved via electromagnetic field creation, where the firing tube may be replaced by guide rails (as in railguns) or wrapped with magnetic coils (like coilguns).
