You can find additional building instructions at hackaday/elmameto/handy. A couple of months ago, I started constructing an electric longboard and have been using one of those large gun-shaped radios designed for RC cars as a controller. Unfortunately, they are not ideal. They are excessively big and heavy, the battery life is too short (and expensive), and you cannot add custom functions. The nunchuck approach is a common method used by EL builders, but I prefer not to keep my hand in a fixed position to achieve consistent speed. Using a lever to set acceleration? Even worse! Creating a self-made Bluetooth controller has many advantages: it's significantly smaller, even when handmade, and an integrated SMD version would likely be half the size. You can add numerous custom functions, such as battery check, lights control, music, autopilot, and others. Plus, it's open-source!
