Donkeys sound their bell to warn off wild animals and locate other donkeys. Donkey owners usually place bells on the halter worn by a pack donkey, and the donkey learns to stop if it hears its own bell ringing from another donkey at a distance. Some elephant bell designs allow people to attach several small bells to a long strip of elastic cord which ties loosely around an animal's legs just below the hock. The jingling noise helps people locate stray elephants in wild animal reserves, national parks and game farms. Elephant bell is very practical for herds because if any individual breaks off from the rest it can be located without much effort.
